SURROUNDINGS
Cattolica is situated at the mouth of the river Conca, just in the heart of the homonymous Valconca, and is surrounded by fascinating landscapes where sea and sweet hills merge in pleasant harmony. The areas surrounding Cattolica were the backdrop for the important historical vicissitudes experienced by peoples who settled the Marches and Romagna, and still retain precious evidences dating back to the period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and the fights between the Malatesta family from Rimini and the Montefeltro dukes from Urbino.

Most castles and fortress which rise on the sweet hills which encircle Cattolica and are surrounded by charming villages date back to that period.

Montefiore Conca, situated 15 kilometres far from Cattolica, is regarded to be one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and was awarded the popular Orange Flag recognition from Italian Touring Club since it is listed among the most fascinating tourist destinations in Italy. The light stones of its fortress, whose impressive profile can be seen from nearly everywhere along the Riviera, and its ancient old town, which is scattered with small workshops and wine bars, are complemented by thick woods of chestnut trees, green meadows and lush countrysides.
The nearby hill, situated at the same distance from Cattolica, is topped by Mondaino, whose medieval origins are celebrated every year in August on the occasion of the famous Palio del Daino (Palio of the Fallow Deer), an outstanding recollection gathering minstrels, jugglers, swordsmen and artisans who meet in the old town while challenging competitions are held in the nearby square.

The arboretum, which is situated a short distance from the old town, gives tourists the possibility to go for pleasant walks across lush footpaths and to visit Modaino's Teatro Dimora (Theatre Residence), a new theatre hosting great theatrical performances and cultural events.

Gemmano rises on the top of an impressive rock spur which dominates Valconca and the hinterland of Cattolica. Its old village is made up of a charming complex of small houses which dominates the lush protected area of Onferno's Natural Reserve, which is famous all over the world for its natural heritage and fascinating Caves and attracts large numbers of visitors every year.

A short distance from the coast, 10 kilometres far from Cattolica, the small village of Saludecio and its impressive medieval walls rise on the top of a sweet charming hill.
Religious buildings, tree-lined avenues, elegant nineteenth-century palaces, medieval narrow streets and small workshops selling local staples give tourists walking down the streets of the city centre the possibility to enjoy utmost profusion. Those flocking to the Riviera during summer won't miss the opportunity to take part in the famous Ottocento Festival, a fascinating celebration dedicated to the arts and works of the XIXth century.

The nearby village of Montegridolfo, whose old town is wholly encircled by impressive medieval walls, attracts plenty of visitors too. Not to be missed is the visit of the inner halls of the castle and of the typical restaurants, which serve traditional specialities from Romagna accompanied by the excellent oil produced in the nearby countrysides.

Those travelling by car can easily reach Morciano di Romagna, a small medieval village which over the course of the last century has turned into a thriving trade centre. Its strong attitude towards trade is evidenced by the traditional Fair of St. Gregorio, the popular cattle and agricultural produce market which every year in March attracts large
numbers of visitors from the surrounding area.  Local festivals, tastings of wines and local staples and intimate inns serving traditional specialities from Romagna are the keys to the success of San Clemente, which is situated about 12 kilometres far from Cattolica's Coast and wholly sheltered by the impressive walls of its Medieval castle.

Situated only four kilometres far from Cattolica, San Giovanni in Marignano, whose millenary history is inextricably linked with the vicissitudes experienced by the Malatesta family, is a thriving cultural centre which attracts plenty of visitors especially during summer. Among the most important local staples of San Giovanni in Marignano are wheat and wine, which are cultivated in the lush plains surrounding the city centre and then served by local holiday farms, inns and restaurants.

Not to be missed is Capodanno del vino (New Year's Day of Wine), which takes place every year in September and gives guests the possibility to taste local wines, as well as further original celebrations, such as the Night of Witches, which is staged here on the occasion of the summer solstice.
