THE CITY
Cattolica gathers plenty of traditional features from Emilia-Romagna: it boasts warm hospitality, utmost kindness and the traditional liveliness which made the Riviera Romagnola famous all over the world and turned it into a renowned gathering place featuring interesting activities and absorbing shows and events.
Situated just in the heart of the charming natural bay nestling on the slopes of Mount San Bartolo, Cattolica's privileged position attracts millions of tourists every year.

Its well-kept city centre is the pivotal point of the vast coastline; it gathers the major highlights, historical buildings, squares, shops, cultural sights and clubs. The most important building is the Town Hall, Palazzo Mancini, which was built in
1914 to celebrate the time when the local municipality acquired independence (1896). Palazzo Mancini dominates Piazza Roosvelt, which has recently been renovated through the introduction of lush gardens and wonderful fountains which have become the symbol of the city.
Around the Town Hall are some of the most important highlights of the city. South is Piazza della Repubblica, the seat of Cattolica's Multipurpose Cultural Centre, which gathers library, media library and the theatre "Teatro della Regina".
During winter, Teatro della Regina stages a remarkably rich array of shows and events, while in summer theatrical representations are held in the nearby open-air Arena della Regina.

Piazza Roosvelt leads to the most important avenue of the city, the latter connecting it with a lively shopping district. From Viale Bovio, designed by architect Franco Vico as the continuation of Via Mancini, plenty of bright shop windows lead to the glamorous shops, boutiques and clubs of the central pedestrian area, which in turn leads to Piazza I° Maggio, the latter boasting breathtaking views over the sea.
Piazza I° Maggio, also known as Piazza delle Fontane Danzanti (Square of the Dancing Fountains), has been the pivotal point of the city since the 20s, when Cattolica began developing as a charming seaside resort. After the extensive renovation works carried out in the late '80s, the square has gained its current look, thus standing out as a welcoming gathering place livened up by lush gardens and outstanding fountains.
Both in summer and in winter, it is always crowded with large numbers of people who meet here to spend pleasant moments together. At fixed timetables, both during the day and at night, the popular show of the dancing fountains is performed, a wonderful choreography featuring impressive water jets which move to the beat of the music.
Shopping lovers won't miss the opportunity to visit Via Dante, the pedestrian precinct situated just next to Viale Bovio which is scattered with a remarkably wide array of shops, clubs, bars and ice-cream shops, and attracts large numbers of visitors especially during summer.
Among the most important sights of the city centre, not to be missed is Piazza del Mercato. The former gathering place of traders from Cattolica in the early ‘900, the period when the Covered Market was built, the impressive building, which dominates the whole square, has recently been renovated

through the restoration of the original architectural patterns. It still hosts the covered market and is surrounded by plenty of shops and trade activities.
Cattolica also boasts older buildings, such as the church of St. Apollinare, whose first erection dates back to 1300, which was then replaced by the current building designed by Cupioli in 1782. Not to be missed is St. Pius V Church, which was erected in 1858 a short distance from Piazza Roosvelt and cherishes a big painting dedicated to the saint which also portrays important symbols of Cattolica's seafaring tradition.
The lovers of local history and culture won't miss the opportunity to visit Museo della Regina (Museum of the Queen), which proposes educational itineraries across Cattolica's ancient seafaring traditions and important Roman finds which bear witness to the origins of the city.
The modern area surrounding the harbour, the brand new Basin of Cattolica, fostered the development of the city. The fascinating Basin of Cattolica, which welcomes those travelling by sea offering them modern services and facilities, is surrounded by plenty of shops, clubs and glamorous boutiques, and is often the venue for plenty of absorbing shows and events.
A short distance from the city centre is Parco della Pace (Park of the Peace), one of the largest green areas of the city. It extends along 2 hectares and offers the lovers of open-air tourism the possibility to enjoy utmost fun while experiencing a closer touch with nature.
Equipped with children's games, recreational areas, targeted itineraries, sports facilities and a large swimming pool, Parco della Pace is easily accessible from the beach through a dedicated subway.
