Situated a short distance from the glamorous seaside resorts of the popular Riviera Romagnola, the hinterland of Cattolica and the province of Rimini gathers plenty of outstanding environmental beauties and historical evidences. The three rivers which cross the province, Conca, Marano and Marecchia, are encircled by the naturalistic oases of the surrounding valleys, whose almost unspoiled territory gathers rare species of animals and a lush vegetation.

The river Conca has its source in the Marches, in Mount Carpegna, and flows for 39 kilometres amidst the sweet Valconca's hills before reaching the sea between Misano and Cattolica. The cycle paths and charming footpaths which flank the river across the Faunal Oasis of the River Conca give tourists the possibility to enjoy breathtaking views over the surrounding landscape.

A short distance from Misano Adriatico's circuit, which is easily accessible through the cycle path, rises Valconca Birdwatching Observatory, a large wooden facility which gives tourists the possibility to admire rare species of birds, such as great white herons, grey herons, black-headed gulls, black-winged stilts, pelicans, storks and common spoonbills.

Walking down the charming footpaths or going for pleasant excursions across the surrounding area, visitors will have the opportunity to admire lush vines and ancient olive groves and colourful meadows carpeted with yellow buttercups, orange pot marigolds, red poppies and purple borage flowers. Mondaino's Arboretum, which gathers more than 5,000 Mediterranean plants, gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views over Valconca and the surrounding territory.

Valconca's inner area features different environmental patterns. Once reached Gemmano, lush landscapes give way to rocky cliffs and gullies. Onferno's Natural Reserve, which is famous for its chalk caves and rough paths, is characterized by succulent plants and rocky landscapes.

Marano Valley too, which extends across the provinces of Rimini and Pesaro-Urbino, is characterized by clayey and karstic landscapes. Marano's Natural Park in Coriano is a protected area which is open all the year round. It gathers different species of animals, such as wild roe deers and small mammals, which run through the huge expanses of grass which in spring are carpeted with wild flowers, and little egrets, kingfishers, hoopoes and cuckoos which populate both white and black poplars and willows.

Situated just across the border between Emilia-Romagna, the Marches and Tuscany, Marecchia Valley is an important naturalistic area. History and nature merge in pleasant harmony across these impressive landscapes ranging from the sheer cliffs of the hinterland to the sweet rolling hills overlooking the coast. The whole territory is carpeted with hawthorn, Spanish broom, juniper and wild roses.

The river Marecchia is flanked by several protected oases, such as the Oasis of Montebello and the Quarry of Poggio Berni, the latter cherishing more than 2,000 fish fossils dating back to the Pliocene, when the valley was completely submerged in sea water.

The lovers of nature and those looking for quiet and intimate beaches won't miss the opportunity to visit San Bartolo Park, a charming promontory falling sheer to the sea situated in the Marches, next to Gabicce, which is easily accessible through the scenic route which connects Cattolica with Fiorenzuola di Focara.
