Leaving Emilia-Romagna and Cattolica behind and heading to Gabicce, visitors will have the possibility to reach San Bartolo Natural Park, whose impressive rocky cliffs overlooking the Adriatic Sea extend between the rivers Foglia and Tavollo. The top of Mount San Bartolo, situated 201 metres above sea level, boasts breathtaking views over the whole of the coastline. On the slopes of the small promontory is a narrow pebbly beach gathering its debris.
The impressive striations of the rocky cliff, which are particularly evident when illuminated by sunlight, bear witness to the sedimentation process which took place million years ago; cinereous clay and blackish bituminous marne are complemented by bright stratifications of chalky crystals, beige clayey marne rich in fossils and grey clay and sandstone.
The other side of the promontory slopes down to the Statale Adriatica and is punctuated with cultivated fields, vines, olive groves and lush trees and bushes. Not to be missed are the rare Linum Maritimus, impressive cliffs and lush Spanish Broom which bloomes in spring.
The protected area of the park provides habitat for roe deers, badgers, porcupines, weasels, hares and foxes, which sometimes reach the beach to look for food. Many birds of prey, such as the rare peregrine falcon, nest in the overhangs of these impressive rocky cliffs which fall sheer to the sea. Not to be missed are cranes and both white and black storks which nest here during migration.
San Bartolo Park has recently been divided into five different footpaths which give guests the possibility to reach the most fascinating spots, enjoy breathtaking views over the sea, discover rare species of trees and bushes, have a pic-nic or visit the important historical buildings and monuments situated in the small settlements which developed hundred years ago.
